| Join us for Service Day on May 14
Give back to the community this Saturday with more than 500 volunteers from Dearborn and metro Detroit who will participate in the Seventh Annual National Arab American Service Day.
On this day of solidarity and service, more than 1,200 Arab Americans in 20 cities nationwide – half of them in metro-Detroit – contribute to their neighborhoods. Each year, the National Network for Arab American Communities (NNAAC) and ACCESS coordinate this project with AmeriCorps to encourage volunteerism and service among diverse people. The event is an example of the way Arab Americans give back and join together to serve their neighborhoods according to the motto for the day: “Serving Communities, Connecting People.”
“National Arab American Service Day is representative of the Arab American community – a community committed to giving back through service and to building bridges with our diverse neighbors,” said Sue Makki, manager of ACCESS’ AmeriCorps program.
The day begins on Saturday with an opening rally at Focus: Hope. Following the rally, volunteers will package more than 3,000 food boxes, build community gardens, plant flowers, clean vacant lots and make landscapes improvements for the Center for Children.
Service Day is spearheaded by members of NNAAC’s national AmeriCorps program, the Arab American Resource Corps, the only national AmeriCorps program offering Arab Americans and non-Arabs the opportunity to serve at Arab American community organizations. National Service Day takes place during AmeriCorps Week, the fifth nationwide celebration of the vital work done by AmeriCorps members in communities across country since the national service program began 18 years ago.
To volunteer, call Sue Makki at 313-842-1928. The event is 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday, May 14, 2011 at Focus: HOPE, 1355 Oakman Blvd, Detroit MI 48238. There will be transportation from ACCESS, 2651 Saulino Court, Dearborn, and 6541 Schaefer Road, Dearborn, to the project site at 9:30 a.m.
